Welcome to EDLD 730/740 Cohort VI!

Hello Cohort VI,

You may already know that EDLD 730 and 740 are blended together and are co-taught. Delores Lindsey, Jeff Heil, and Pat Stall are your instructors. We have set up a blog where course information, discussion, etc. will be housed.

For now, the blog has the syllabus and a bit of information about us. We would like for you to add a little about yourselves just as a way for us to get to know you better. As a beginning, include your name, current place of work, position, and dissertation proposal topic. Click on the word comment at the bottom of this post to leave your information.

Please preview the syllabus. It has a calendar with dates and room numbers as well as a brief overview of assignments and objectives of the course. You will note that the books  listed below will be used in the class. You can get them from Amazon (or wherever you like to shop online for books) in a matter of days. Scan A Whole New Mind prior to the first class. It is a fairly easy read. We will re-read parts at particular times during class.

You will only need to purchase one of the Christensen books. We would suggest that K-12 educators select Disrupting Class and Higher Education educators select The Innovative University. The same basic principals are in both books; however, we find that each has more pertinent application and examples for particular audiences. Having said that, you are welcomed to select whichever Christensen text you would like.

As is the central focus of the JDP program, we will continue to delve into leadership and social justice through the lens of cultural proficiency with the book, Culturally Proficient Leadership.

A Whole New Mind (2005) by Daniel Pink.
Culturally Proficient Leadership (2009) (Paperback) by Raymond D. Terrell & Randall B. Lindsey
Choose one required book from the following:
Disrupting Class  (2008) by Clayton M. Christensen (K-12)
The Innovative University (2011) by Clayton M. Christensen and Henry J. Eyring (HE)
We look forward to meeting you first through the blog and more so in person on September 24 at 9 am.

Delores, Jeff, and Pat

  2. Hi! I am Tim Heck, and I am currently the assistant principal of Washington Middle School in the Vista Unified School District. My dissertation topic revolves around leadership in California middle schools which have exited program improvement. I am currently trying to discover (2) middle schools in San Diego county that were at least year 3 in PI and subsequently exited in order to conduct an in-depth case study. Any help with that would be genuinely appreciated! :-)

  4. Hello Everyone,

One of my interests, is tapping the unrealized human capital within the work force of a school district. The focus of my research is the classified employee. The topic for my current research is "Tapping the Untapped Human Capital in Our Schools:Increasing Engagement and Participation of Classified Employees."
    Continually looking for "authentic happiness,"

  5. Love this Blog site. Presents a great first impression. Also love the fact that Daniel Pink is the first author! His work aligns with a lot of what is coming out of neuroeducation, which is, by the way, the focus of my current research. Very inspirational stuff. I can't wait for the class.

  8. Inspiration - my brother is turning 50 on the 24th. Taking on the challenge of the mini-sage (described on p. 119 of Pink) I wrote one in honor of his influence on me. It was fun playing with words and refining until I was at word 50.

This process reminded my of "tweeting" An art which I am pushing myself to explore. Restricting the essence of thought into a certain number of words is ...invigorating. Does an ellipsis count?

  30. Hello,
Are we supposed to respond to a Blog Question from "Culturally Proficient Leadership" before our next meeting?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Continued from the previous blog....

If so, my questions are, (addressing my peers in the JDP cohort)
    1. Where does your journey begin?
    2. What fundamental change do you believe should occur in an educators' teaching practice within your district or school to impact a generation of poverty?
    3. How is the "power of definition" revealed within your organization?
    4. Define the elements you find within yourself (the mirror of your interior) which help to meet the needs of those with whom you work.

    Regards,
    Rebekah

  33. Hi, I'm Beverly Prange. I work as an administrator in the Migrant Education Program at SDCOE. My dissertation is about Latino students who are the first in their families to graduate high school and attend college. I am exploring their experiences of supportive relationships with educators during high school, and the role educator empathy may play in those relationships.
